Learning at the Zoo

As a supplement to our Science curriculum, I signed the boys up for a series of monthly classes for homeschoolers at the zoo. We attended the first class a few weeks ago. Although it was a rainy and dreary day, we had a great time! I was very impressed with the teacher and the lesson.

This class was entitled, "Pollution Solution." The lesson included a simulation exercise where students were given scenarios and had to decide whether or not they would choose to act to protect or pollute "Lake Erie." They got to see the consequences of pollution. The students also got to observe two animal "visitors" in the classroom: a flamingo and a huge toad. After the lesson, we all walked to the river otter exhibit. We observed and learned about the otters. We were also given a great booklet summarizing the lesson and including some extension lessons and fun puzzles.

We had a great time and we're looking forward to the next zoo class!

I have to admit that I've never been to the zoo on such a rainy day. It was awesome, though, to have the place practically all to ourselves! We visited a few exhibits, including Sting Ray Bay (which was actually free that day).

Touching sting rays.... now that's some real hands-on learning!
