Recent School Projects

These winter months are heavy duty school months around here! We've been working hard on lots of learning! Here's a peek at some things we've been doing ---

Ray is officially preparing for his First Communion!
I am using materials that I used in my first career as 2nd grade teacher.
We are having fun making a First Communion Scrapbook.

Ray has already completed his formal preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which he will receive prior to his First Communion. This handwriting sheet shows some of the words he learned AND how great his printing is. He is also now studying cursive handwriting.

We spent the first part of January learning about the Civil War. The boys both made poster booklets with the basic information about the Civil War.

We also read lots and lots of short biographies during January. Most of them were about people who were important in the Civil War and then later in the Civil Rights Movement. We made booklets about some of the people.

We used these cards to play a matching game and help us remember "who did what."

A Winter Rebus Story by Ray

Both boys continue to make good progress with their reading skills. In addition to their daily reading practice and our ongoing chapter book read alouds (right now they're really into The Magic Treehouse series), we work on a "Story of the Week."

A few weeks ago we enjoyed this old poetic favorite.... Chicken Soup With Rice by Maurice Sendak.

The boys had fun helping me make yummy chicken soup with rice for dinner too!

Although I didn't take pictures, we practiced counting money in January. Both boys are really good at that. They continue to work on learning their addition and subtraction facts and Ray is now adding two digit numbers.

The boys also finished their morning workbooks in January. I updated the template, making the work a bit more challenging, including more daily writing practice. And then I got new books made that should last the rest of the school year. Here's what their books look like now ---

I'll try to remember to post some completed pages for you to see.

And so we're up to 100 days of school this week. (We need to complete a minimum of 180.) This month we'll be focusing on Geography and map skills, with a special emphasis on South America. We'll be telling time, working on ABC order, doing a dinosaur unit study, and learning household words in Spanish. It's a short month.... and a busy one in our homeschool!

  1. So I should my kids to your school? ;) Ray's handwriting is good - way to go! The winter stories were great - loved those. Do your boys really like the journal pages? I think it would take all morning for Austin to do something like that. I really hate handwriting with him... He's improving but anything more than a few lines and it's tear city. Though he did choose to do a workbooky kind of thing for Lent. We'll see.

What do you do when the boys will not focus? I have this issue all the time. Of course the interruptions from the younger girls never help.
