Ray's First Holy Communion

" I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

Whoever eats of this bread will live forever."

John 6:51

 

On Saturday evening we enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Ray's First Holy Communion! It's truly awesome to see how grown up he is and what reverence and joy he had as he finally was able to share fully in the Eucharist. We are very proud of him.

 

He looked so much like a mini-Jon in his spiffy suit!

 

Jon surprised me with a beautiful corsage! At the last minute I put a jacket on Adam. He loved it and wore it all evening. He called it his cape.

Ray was so serious about keeping his hands folded the whole time.

 

We luckily were assigned to sit in the front row!

We had a great view to see him receive Communion.

I was too emotional to care that his shirt was hanging out in the back.

 

Although it was a chilly and very overcast day, there were two points during the Mass -- just after the Consecration and after Communion -- when brilliant rays of sun shone through the big rose window behind the altar. It was a beautiful sign of the Holy Spirit's presence among us!

After Mass we were thrilled to host a big houseful of family and friends for a grand celebration. Although I didn't get many pictures of our guests, we are so thankful that so many loved ones were able to join us. Jon's mom ended up not being up for the long trip down from Michigan and we were disappointed about that. However, two of his sisters and their families did come down and it was awesome to have them with us. My dad and Mary were here and were so helpful with setting things up and doing some last minute cleaning and preparation. My fantastic mom helped me plan and prepare the food. My sisters were great about getting the house opened up and the food set out.

Sorry.... no pictures of the food. I guess I was too busy enjoying the food and the company! I will say that it ended up being a delicious and easy meal.

Several weeks ago Ray and I decided it would be neat to do our annual backyard May Crowning after his First Communion Mass. He had definite ideas about how he wanted to do it and it was so cute to see him lead the other children in prayer.

 

We had all of the children choose a flower and gather around our Mary garden.

 

 

Following Ray's directions, we said three Hail Mary's.... he stepped forward one stone for each prayer.

 

Ray crowned Mary and then we all sang one verse of "Immaculate Mary." Then all of the children took turns placing their flowers in the vases around the Mary statue.

 

 

Since it was Mother's Day weekend, we crowned our Mother in heaven and then gave flowers to each of our moms as well.

Ray received so many very special gifts for his First Communion. We are in awe of the generosity of our family and friends.

This special First Communion set came from Grandma Ryzenga.

My dad gave Ray the Rosary that belonged to HIS dad, who was also named Ray.
This is such a special treasure!

First Communion Preparations

For the past several months Ray has been preparing to receive his First Holy Communion. This Saturday is his big day! Please pray for him as he will come to the altar of the Lord for the first time at the 5:00 Mass. We all are very excited!

It has been such a joy to be able to teach and prepare him for this very special part of our lives as Catholics. Once upon a time, in what seems like a former life, I taught second grade. I absolutely loved and treasured the process of preparing the children for First Communion. It's truly awesome to be able to walk that walk now with my own son.

We have prayed, read lots of books, studied, talked, participated in parish preparation activities, celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation, made crafts, assembled a very dapper outfit, planned a party...... and it's been a great experience for our entire family. (And we get to do it again next year with Adam!) This process of passing on the faith is so enriching and fulfilling. It deepens our own faith and challenges us to grow in holiness and devotion. Jon and I see this task as central to our vocation and we love it.

So here are pictures of some of the preparation activities from the past several months....

BAKING BREAD ----

We made this special Italian Easter bread during Easter week after watching the awesome (though dated) video "Grandma's Bread."

We've worked on learning the names of the various parts of the church, sacramentals, and other objects used during Mass. I had made a model of a church a few years ago for VBS. We had fun with it this winter.

A few weeks ago Ray and I participated in the parish First Communion retreat. It was a very nice afternoon of learning and prayer. We played First Communion Bingo, baked bread, listened to a story, made a banner, and enjoyed a nice lunch.

The homeschool and school of religion children were asked to bring their First Communion clothes and pose for a "class" picture (which is funny because Ray only knows one of these kids).

At the end of the retreat the children sang a beautiful Table Prayer Song, which we learned from a video and had practiced quite a bit at home.

Our parochial vicar was kind enough to give us a sacristy tour after daily Mass one morning. We all learned a lot!

We've spent extra time in church after Masses as we've practiced the names of the objects there and discussed their significance and symbolism.

This week we made a few Eucharist-themed crafts to use as decorations for the party.

 When I taught second grade the students and their parents always completed a nine-week scrapbook project. I decided to do this project with Ray as a supplement to the textbook we used from the parish for his preparation lessons. We had fun doing it and he is very proud of the finished product, which will be a keepsake for him. We'll add his certificate and pictures at the back of the book.

I love that last page where he wrote "This is Jesus." I had asked him to draw a chalice and host and he added those words. I knew then that he was ready. It seems like such a short time ago when we took him to be baptized. I can't wait to have him share in the Eucharistic Feast with us on Saturday and for a lifetime to come! It's truly the best gift I could ever share with him.

Adam is 7!

This week we had lots of fun celebrating Adam's 7th birthday!

His main request was "breakfast in bunk bed."

He was surprised by this gift.... a giant ball to replace the one that burst a few weeks ago.

Ray was very excited to give Adam the card and presents he had selected.

 

I think he read every "brother" card at Target.

 In the afternoon we hosted a Pokémon Playdate with all of Adam's Pokémon buddies as well as Pappy and Mary.

Adam got to select the snacks and he chose Pokémon characters to go with each snack.

 We made prize bags that included personalized Pokémon cards made here.

 Mamaw and my sisters and brother-in-law and niece joined us for a pizza dinner. It was a fun day..... until Ray spiked a fever at dinner time! Unfortunately, Adam's birthday ended with a sad, sick little boy. We found out today that he has strep throat... and we've exposed our entire family and friends. Uggghhh!

But Adam is thrilled to be seven. And we are very thankful to our family members and friends for showering him with birthday greetings and presents.
