While we were away...

Ray and Adam had some wonderful adventures last week while Jon and I took our getaway to Amish country. My dad ("Pappy") and his wife Mary not only stayed with the boys, but also took on the teaching duties! They planned really great activities and outings to teach the boys about the Hopewell Indians.

They made binders with facts and pictures.

They visited the Newark Earthworks, where they saw mounds built by the Hopewell Indians.

Adam fell in love with FLINT! He loved finding it and learning all about it.The sign of a great learning day: After the field trip, the boys used clay to make models of the mounds.
They put together boxes of "Hopewell Treasures" that included various elements/minerals that the Hopewell people used. The next day they took a trip to the Ohio Historical Center. They saw the mastadon as well as many other animals native to Ohio.
Adam discovered more flint. They even saw great scenes replicating the life/villages of the Hopewell people.

This was a wonderful learning experience for Ray and Adam! (Thanks again Dad and Mary!) They are still talking about the Hopewell and teaching me new things! (And - awesomely - while they were learning all that, I was soaking in a hot tub, eating Amish food, and relaxing!)
